Problems in the Church

Bishops sold Church positions, a practice called Simony

Many village priests went against religion and got married and had families

Priests were illiterate and couldn't read their prayers

Reform and Church Organization

Pope Leo IX and Pope Gregory VII enforced church laws against Simony and the marriage of priests

The pope's group of advisers was called the papal Curia.The Curia also acted as a court.It developed Canon Law (law of the Church)on matters such as marriage, divorce and inheritance

The Church collected taxes in the form of tithes. This consumed one tenth the yearly income from every Christian family

New Religious Orders

1200's wandering friars traveled around spreading the Churches ideas

A Spanish priest, Dominic founded a group of friars called the Dominicans.Many were scholars.

An Italian named Frances of Assisi founded a group of Friars but treated the friars and animals as his brothers and sisters.

A New Style of Church Architecture

In the 1100's a new style of architecture called gothic evolved throughout medieval Europe.

The term gothic comes from the Germanic tribe named the Goths.

Unlike the heavy, gloomy Romanesque buildings, gothic cathedrals thrust upwards as if they were reaching for heaven
