Social Bonding in Dogs
Social Bonds
Nonreproductive centered social bonds have been shown to increase longevity and higher offspring survivability
-
-
Oxytocin(OT)
OT has long been associated with social behaviors but only in a reproductive context has it been conclusively linked
It is suspected that it is connected to nonreproductive social bonds and behaviors such as friendship and alloparental behaviors
The Goal of the Study
Conclusively show that OT is not only linked but helps form and maintain nonreproductive social bonds and behaviors in domestic dogs
Methods
-
The dogs were then kept in a room with their owner and a familiar dog for an hour and were observed for changes in behavior associated with social bonds(approach, affiliation, and time in proximity)
-
Results
All parameters: affiliation, social proximity, and social orientation showed a marked increase after treatment with OT in relation to their owners
Affiliation and social proximity showed a marked increase after treatment with OT in relation to their dog partners
-
-
Conclusions
The overarching take away is that social-positive behaviors that facilitate bond formation and maintenance trigger the release of OT and these bond go beyond species, kin, and sexual partner
