Industrial Revolution
before the industrial revolution
people lived in rural areas
grassland, rivers, canals, iron, crops, --> land resources
lots of workers at home
people specialized in one part or one job in particular
inventions
power loom
steam engine
cotton gin
telegraph
banking laws changed so it was easier to get loans
more people -> not everyone has to work all the time -> people have more free time
people started inventing and getting new ideas
affects (after industrial revolution)
towns over flowed with people coming in looking for jobs in factories
many people lost jobs to machines
sometimes rioted
air became polluted
housing was built faster than plumbing was installed
waste was dumped into street
disease spread
unhygienic living conditions
people on top made all the money
people who did the work in factories were paid very little for back breaking work
all profit went to factory overseers
factory life (late factories)
conditions
dangerous
fast moving machine parts - easy to get hurt on
work 12-14 hr work days w/ 30 min break in the middle
poor housing for workers (if any)
many people lined up for a job
people could be replaced within 15 min
cities overflowed with people searching for employment in factories
since it was so easy for overseers to replace workers, factory overseers did not value their workers health and mentally / physically abused them on a regular basis
very low wages
often people did not live past 38 due to the extreme labor in factories and the abysmal conditions
child labor
young children were forced to work in factories
children were easier for overseers to intimidate
many orphans went to work in factories because there was nowhere else for them to go
children were whipped and beaten by overseers
malnourished to keep them weak so they can't fight back against overseers
severe injuries acquired by machine work
lots of cotton in air - bad for lungs
children were always unhealthy and weak
started working at ages as low as 4-5
factory life (early factories)
conditions
good housing
factories had their own communities
everyone knew everyone
factory overseers could not replace people as easily as they would be able to later so they made effort into treating people well so they would not quit
higher wages for workers
child labor
children were given an education
kids got breaks
paid more
lived with and worked with parents
children were in good health
