metals
Non-ferrous alloys
Alloys - A combination of two or more metallic metals.
ferrous alloys
Sterling silver
Solder
Bronze
Pewter
Brass
Brass is an alloy it contains a combination of copper and zinc. Brass is mainly used for decorative and mechanical applications.
Pewter is an alloy it is mostly made of tin and tiny percent of tin and antimony. Pewter is a very old metal it is used for decorations, household items, building materials and jewellery.
Solder is an alloy it consists of tin and lead. It melts at very high temperatures. Solder is used to join two metals or to form permanent connections between electronic components.
Serling silver is an alloy it has a combination of mostly silver and copper. It is mostly used to make jewellery.
non-ferrous pure metals
Magnesium
lead
Copper
gold
Aluminium
Aluminium is a silvery metal it is light weight. it is used for window frames, kitchen utensils and aeroplanes.
Copper is mostly used for electrical equipment this is because of its excellent electrical and heat conductivity. Copper is also used for roofing because it corrodes slowly.
Pure gold is very soft so it has to be alloyed with other metals such as silver and magnesium.
Lead is mainly used for car batteries and to store corrosive liquids.
Magnesium is used in items that benefit from being light such as cameras, laptops and luggage. It is also used in fireworks because it creates a bright light when it reacts to the air.
Non-ferrous - A non-ferrous metal does not contain iron and also doesn't have any magnetic properties. Non-ferrous materials are also more resistant to corrosion
Pure metals - A pure metal only contains one type of metallic atom
ferrous - Ferrous metals contain iron and are known to be magnetic.
Ferrous pure metals
Iron
iron rust very quickly but is a very important metal because it is used to create steel. Steel is used in civil engineering.
stainless steel
steel
cast iron
carbon steel
alloy steel
carbon steel is an alloy it contains iron and carbon. It is used in buildings and bridges. High carbon steel has a strong tensile strength so it us used to make sharp objects such as knifes and blades.
cast iron is made of iron and carbon. cast iron is used to make kitchen utensils such as pots and pans this is because cast iron distributes heat evenly through the surface.
stainless steel is mainly made of iron and carbon. stainless steel is mainly used for cookware and cutlery.
steel is an alloy of iron and carbon it also contains some other elements. it is a cheap and strong metal so it is used in civil engineering.
alloy steel contain lot of different types of elements such as manganese, silicon, steel and iron. it is used for pipelines, power generators and auto parts.
Bronze is an alloy it has a combination of mostly copper and tin. Bronze is mostly used for sculptures, medals and music instruments. It is also resistant to corrosion.
