Case study : The Ghostly Sheep
Facts
Hemogram and Biochemistry Results
low erythrocyte and hemoglobin level
low PCV and MHCH but normal MCV
very high neutrophil level with more segmented neutrophil than band neutrophil
lymphocyte level is normal
very high thrombocyte level
very low plasma protein level
low calcium level
very low creatinine level
low total serum protein and albumin levels with normal globulin level
Low bilirubin level
Farm Background
Semi-intensive system. Animals will be fed with product of soy, pellet and Napier grass.
Common problems in farm are respiratory problem, endoparasites, maggot wounds due to trauma and lameness.
There are 3 sheep houses. One for newly arrived animals, one for adult lamb and one for nursing and lamb house. Nursing and lamb house is located near the fish pond
Ideas
low bilirubin level is caused by aneamia
normal lymphocyte level suggests absence of viral infection
Secondary bacterial infection may be present due to myiasis and/or immunosuppression.
FAMACHA – pale like ghost may indicate score 5 and its fatal
H.contortus may have caused PGE - anaemia and and thrombocytosis
segmented neutrophils more than band neutrophils and a higher than normal number of Neutrophils suggests Regerative Left Shift
hypoglobuminia can lead to pulmonary congestion and submandibular edema
low creatinine in blood means low musle mass cause lower than nomal muscle metablosim taking place
possibility of fecal oral route transmission cause dirty feed being given to animals
low Calcium level due to malnutrition
Learning Issues
Do the dead lambs have maggot wounds?
What is gamma-GT?
Is rotational grazing practiced?
Why is the eosinophil result is 0?
Is anti-helmintics given at right dosage?
Why is there marked thrombocytosis?
Why are the total serum protein & albumin levels are low but the globulin level is normal?
Action Plans
PCR
Fecal flotation test
Mc Master egg count
Bacterial isolation and identification
FAMACHA
random test on asymptomatic animals
Additional test to determine EPO level in blood and reticulocyte index
Screening of water sample from pond
Investigate how workers administered medications
