- - - - Chris/Alex hitchhiked which doesn't seem very transcendental, because in Emerson and Thoreau's definitions of transcendentalism, its all about self-reliance and how society is bad, so this doesn't seem to fit. However, in the modern world, it is difficult to get long distances without a ride in a car, and he didn't even bring his own car, he seemed to rely on himself and his luck with others for his transportation to his destination
      - yes, he utilized the bus, but he didn't expect for it to be there and he was still disconnected from humanity "But despite the proximity of the bus to civilization, for all practical purposes McCandless was cut off from the rest of the world. He spent nearly four months in the bush all told, and during that period he didn't encounter another living soul." (165)
