Inheritance of property
Previously it was a 'primitive communism'. where there were no private properties and everyone had equal shares.
Later, the forces of production developed and the society's wealth began to rise. This brought the patriarchal monogamous nuclear family.
The rise of the monogamous family meant that fathers had to make sure their properties went to the rightful heirs.
Units of consumption:
- Advertisers urge families to buy all the latest products.
- The media target children, who use 'pester power' to get what they want.
- Children who lack the latest items may get mocked and separated from the rest of the children.
Criticisms:
- Marxist focus on the nuclear family helping capitalism but ignores the wide range of family structures.
- Feminist believe family serves men more than capitalism.
- Functionalists argue that they ignore the real benefits of family to its members.
Feminists
Liberal
Women's oppression is gradually overcome through changing people's attitudes and through changes in the law.
We are moving to greater equality but for further improvement, more changes in attitudes need to occur.
