The factors that affect Climate
Energy from the sun:
Different places get different amounts of sunlight
Earth is a sphere:
Solar Rays are more direct when a city/country is on the Equator
If the Earth wasn't tilted, northern and southern places would get very little sunlight because they would get indirect sunlight
Equator:
Near
Mainly hot all year
Far
The farther, the colder
Global Winds
The weight of wind changes Temp.
Light Air = Warm Temp.
Heavy Air = Cold Temp.
Water
Ocean Currents:
Move heat around the Earth
Driven by Wind
Carry warm or cool water
Water temp. affects Air temp. around it
Without water the Earth would overheat
Mountains
Affect Temp. and Precipitation
Temp. decreases with decreasing Elevation
Create wet and dry areas
Cools moist air
This happens because the mountain forces air to rise, where the air cools and the precipitation falls
Storms:
Create when two air masses collide. Air & water can be those air masses
Can produce Tornados
Latitude:
Effects Temp. because of the place of a country/city
Landforms(see Mountains):
The higher Elevation, the higher Temp.
"Highland" climate region
