Identity Fusion
Identity fusion seems to play a significant role in the books we've read so far. In these books, identity fusion appears as a negative outcome, and mostly occurs amongst slaves. I feel like slaves have to resist the identity fusion of accepting that they are powerless in order to have a chance of surviving and escaping.
Passing
Passing is shown as a one way to take advantage of your skin color to avoid discrimination and racism. Although black people can use this to their advantage, it is portrayed through the black community as something that is wrong, and should not be utilized. This was shown through Nella Larsen's Passing and in Pudd'nhead Wilson. "Passing" is significant because of how controversial it is but also how most people, who are able to use it to their advantage, don't want to admit that they have used it some point in time to avoid the criticism (like Irene Redfield).

Stereotypes
This is significant because all of the books we've read have shown different perspectives of races and clearly displays the racism in the past. This also connects with identity fusion because some slaves feel as if these stereotypes about them are true since they try to prove them wrong but mostly end up failing. There is also a pattern that appears within all of these books: white people have an exaggerated or untrue view of black people while black people mostly have accurate views of white people and describe them how they are.
