MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM
stabilize our joints
maintain our posture and generate heat during activity
movement of our body can be voulentary and controlled by the skeletal muscles
by involuntary and controlled by smooth muscles
movement
3 TYPES OF MUSCLE TISSUE AND FUNCTION
skeletal muscle: a single cylindrical muscle cell
each muscle surrounded by connective tissue sheath called the epimusium
made up of hundreds of thousands muscle fibers binded together and wrapped in a connective tissue covering
cardic muscle: pumps blood through body
also called heart muscle or myocardium
involuntary striated muscle that constitutes the main tissue of the walls of the heart
smooth muscle: forms the supporting tissue of the blood vessels and hollow internal organs
consists of narrow spindle shaped cells with a single
located iin nucleus
contracts slowly and automatically
