2.8 protocols
-
-
TCP/IP
Both of these protocols work together to allow the transfer of the different packages from one computer to another over the internet.
UDP (User Data Protocol)
This is a computer protocol that is a part of the Internet Protocol suite. Unlike TCP, it is unreliable and connectionless protocol. So, there is no need to establish connection prior to data transfer.

2.1 types of software
Open source - A type of software that is paid for but you can access the source code and it can be edited or changed. An advantage of this would be is that it can be used to teach people how to code due to the access to the source code of the software. A disadvantage of this would be that this will make it easier to pirate the software due to knowing how it works
Closed source - type of software that paid for but you cannot access the source code. It cannot be changed or edited in anyway nor can it be redistributed. An advantage of this would be that it is a lot more secure than open source due to lack of access to the source code. A disadvantage of this type of software would be that it cannot be used to teach new users about coding.
Off the shelf - This is a product that can be bought in a hop or downloaded off the internet. An example of this would be microsoft office, So word, excel, powerpoint. An advantage of this would be that it can be easily accessed as you can simply go to the shop and buy it or download it and pay for the license. A disadvantage of this would be that the product can become very expensive or is expensive from the get go
Bespoke - This is a product that can be bought in a hop or downloaded off the internet. An example of this would be microsoft office, So word, excel, powerpoint. An advantage of this would be that it can be easily accessed as you can simply go to the shop and buy it or download it and pay for the license. A disadvantage of this would be that the product can become very expensive or is expensive from the get go.
Shareware - A type of software that is given out for free initially in the style of a free trial with limited features and are pushed to make their own copies and to distribute their own versions of the software. This is usually downloaded from a website. An advantage of this would be that the software is free and doesn’t require any additional payment for it to work. A disadvantage of this would be the software may not be that advanced considering it is distributed and made for free and with no money inputted into the project at all.
Freeware - A type of software that is given out for free and there are no EULA terms and conditions or any rights and/or a licence for the users to follow but they must follow the rules set out by the publishers themselves. An advantage of this could be that it is completely free. A disadvantage of this would be is that the person who downloads the software has no rights at all.
2.3 Utility software
-
Antivirus - protects the computer against viruses, an example of this would be mcafee though this service can be costly a cheaper antivirus software you can use would be windows AVG which is free but they shove the paid version of the software down your throat on a regular basis when the free version is good enough for you computer to be safe and sustainable.
Anti-spyware - Protects the computer against people trying to spy into what you are doing this service is provided by the same software as antivirus.
Compression software - Makes files smaller so that you can download more files and transfer it easier. This is the software that allows for easy transfer for files and also helps with the internet distribution of software or games.
Disk defragmenter - Organizes the hard disk, so that it’s easier to get to certain data. This is a software that is provided by the computer and can be found in the settings the can increase the speed of the computer although only slightly.
2.4 operating systems
Single User - This is a type of operating system and only allows for one singular user at a time. An example of this would be windows or linux. An advantage would
be the simple nature of the OS not bringing in any other plans that are not necessary and would also sa
ve RAM space when using the computer. A disadvantage would be that only one person could use it at a time..
Multi User - This is a type of operating system that allows for more than one user at a given time. It allows multiple users to be logged in without shutting down one users An advantage of this would be that you can have multiple people using the same workstation which can boost productivity. A disadvantage would be the high amount of RAM which would be taken up by the OS.
Single Processor - this is an operating system that allows for only one task to be processed at a time and relieves the CPU of the task of disk scheduling to allow for faster processing. An advantage of this is that it speeds up the processor.
A disadvantage would be that you can only use one Processor.
Multi Processor - This is an operating system that allows for more than one task to be completed at a time to allow for fast processing of the OS.An advantage of this would be faster than a single processor OS. A disadvantage would be the higher price of it.
-
2.5 functions
Off the shelf - This is the type of operating system that can be bought from a shop that can be bought by anybody else.
An advantage of this would be the ease of access to this software as you can just take it ‘off the shelf’ from a store
Open source - This can be accessed by anyone and can even by edited via the source code which is open and accessible by anyone.
An advantage of this would be that anyone can edit it and can even use it to teach themselves how to code an operating system.
A disadvantage of this would be that this software usually isn’t very good or as reliable as windows for example.
Bespoke - this is an operating system that is specifically designed for a specific person or company.
An advantage of this would be that the OS will be perfect for your needs.
A disadvantage would be the cost of such software as you need to commission a person to do it.
