SUSTAINABILITY OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Conserving energy
Recycling
Natural Resources
Anything in nature that people value
Air, water, fossil fuels, plants, and animals are natural resources
Plastics are not natural resources
There are two types, which are renewable and nonrenewable
Reducing, reusing, and recycling helps to conserve our resources.
Greenhouse Effects
greenhouse effect is the warming of Earth
greenhouse gasses, such as CO2, trap heat on the Earth
Without the greenhouse gases, Earth would be too cold to live on
Too much greenhouse gases can cause global warming
Humans are causing global warming
Humans can reduce global warming by burning less fossil fuels and raising less cows (methane)
Climate Change (aka global warming)
Global warming is the average temperature of Earth
Earth gets warmer naturally, but this is happening a lot faster.
Global warming is caused by greenhouse gasses that trap heat
Humans burning fossil fuels is putting more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
Trees remove carbon dioxide, so we need to plant more trees
Global warming causes bad weather and diseases but we can still fix the problem
Humans should use less fossil fuels ad more renewable resources
Population growth
More people are on Earth using up our resources more quickly
In 10 years, there will be more than 8 billion people on earth
About 200 years, the human population increased by a lot
Recycling can reduce how much resources are being used
Earth can only hold a certain amount of people
Humans and their enviornment
Soil
Soil is a mix of rocks, water, and dead stuff
Weathering breaks rocks into small pieces (sediments)
Erosion moves the sediments to other places
More humus helps the plants to grow
Soil has different layers the topsoil has the most humus
Plants cannot grow in bedrock, so why must take care of the topsoil
Air pollution
air pollution can come from different places, such as cars
Burning fossil fuels releases poisonous gases, such as CO2
Air pollution can cause cancer and global warming
Ozone when it's up high protects from the sun, but becomes poisonous when it's near us
Air pollution can mix with clouds to acid rain
Cows produce lots of methane, which is a greenhouse gas
Conserving our resources will cause less air pollution
