Information
Milton Ernest "Robert" Rauschenberg, an American painter and graphic artist.

Both a painter and a sculptor, who would combine those two works together. He also worked with photography, printmaking, paper making and performance.
Awarded the National Medal of Arts (1993), and the Leonardo da Vince World Award of Arts (1995).

Married and divorced to Susan Weil, no children / lived in New York City, and in Florida.
Art
Often used combinations of different textures and materials to create artwork, e.g Red Interior (1954)
His artwork went through a series of changes a lot during his life - had a series of colourful pop art pieces of work, but then also kind of 'grey-wash' pencil pieces. He also mad scuptures, and changed between different combinations in which Red Interior is an example of his 'red' pieces.
Uses existing images and textiles to make collages, therefore linking photography and paints, materials etc. together.

Path to Art
Through pressure from his parents, Rauschenberg studied pharmacology in the University of Texas - but he was expelled for refusing to dissect a frog.
Rauschenberg refused to kill on the battlefield, instead became a medical technician in the Navy Hospital Corps.
While on leave, he saw oil paintings in person and the Huntington Art Gallery in California.
Once the war ended, he began attending art classes at Kansas State University (1947). Here he changed his name to Robert, 'Bob', in start of his 'new life'.
Following year, traveled to Paris to study at Academie Julian.
