Sustainability of Natural Resources
Fossil Fuels
Fossil Fuels (oil) are nonrenewable, unlike solar energy
Conserving Energy
Recycling
Natural Resources
Anything in nature that people value
We use energy resources to power our cities
Plastic is not a natural resource, unlike air, water, plants, and animals
The two types of resources are renewable and nonrenewable
Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling can help us conserve our resources
Energy Sources
Solar Energy
Climate Change
Global Warming is about the temperature of Earth
Climate change happens naturally but humans are making it happen faster
Global warming is caused by greenhouse gasses
Humans burning fossil fuels is creating more Carbon Dioxide
Trees remove carbon dioxide, so we need more trees
Global Warming is causing bad weather and diseases but we can still fix it.
Population Growth
Earth has a carrying capacity
About 200 years ago the human population increased a lot
More humans on earth means that they are less resources
In 20 years there will more than 8 billion people on earth
Humans can reduce their use of resources to help with conservation
Recycling is a good way to reduce our use resources
Soil
Soil is a mix of rocks water and dead stuff
Weathering breaks rocks into small pieces called sediments
Erosion moves the sediment to other places
Plants need rocks and humus to grow
Soil has different layers and the topsoil has the most humus
Air Pollution
Fossil like coal gas and oil release chemicals into the air.
When fossil fuels are burned they release chemicals like carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide
They are greenhouse gases, so they contribute to global warming
The ozone layer isn't safe from air pollution either
Pollution can even come from cow burps which is methane
Greenhouse Effect
Greenhouse effect is the warming of the Earth
Greenhouse gases such as Carbon Dioxide warms the Earth
Without the Greenhouse gases Earth would be too cold for life
To much Greenhouse Gases makes the Earth too hot which is causing Global Warming
The Humans are causing more Greenhouse Gases
Burning fossil fuels and cows producing methane can be reduced by humans
Humans and their environment
The three ways to help the environment is conserving, cleaning up, and chiming in
For the last 200 years humans have greatly impacted the environment
During the industrial revolution there was more people that caused more pollution
Using non-renewable resources causes pollution and will eventually run out
Human beings need to take action to improve the environment and our survival
