Pre-Assessment for Differentiation
Pre-Assessment activity description:
The G1 Students will be performing a short quiz involving a floating posture, hold breath timing and kicking stage. The small test will be divided into 3 groups right after activity based on the result. The students are placed into advanced, intermediate and developing.
Advance
5 students can confidently and competently streamline glide and kicking on their front at least 10 meters of the pre-assessment swimming stroke correctly.
Intermediate
12 students have some knowledge about the freestyle swim as shown in their performance below 10 meters, but need to develop more confidence in floating techniques and leg movement.
Developing
5 students appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with floating techniques and are at different levels and 2 students have no clue of the topic and need to be tested further for special needs.
ELL
The teacher will take the time to build and link the swimming vocabulary with the students to deepen their impressions through presentations and repeating.
Learning disability students
Students with disabilities will work on developing the relationship of confidence first and use pool equipment to assist them.
Topic:
Students will be able to push and glide across the hula hoop of the water on their front with ears in the water and a long body position.
Final Assessment:
The students consistently demonstrate relaxed breath control during submersions and take a breath between repeated submersions. Comfortably and confidently submerges to pick up objects without ingesting or inhaling water.
Advance
These students will continue to practice floating with kicking stage but extend the distance towards to 15 meters.
Intermediate
These students will practice by starting with a floatation aid in both hands floating in different positions and returning to standing. Without flotation aids, once they feel confident.
Developing
For the developing group that we might do is build the student's confidence then ask them to step through the hoop as far as they are able. We can set up some dive sticks on the pool bottom to let them pick it up.
ELL
ELL students will work on depending on their language skill level and might allow ELL students to make bilingual flashcards for course vocabulary, or at higher levels encourage them to use only English on their cards.
Learning disability students
To qualify for the more involved adaptations of a reader, scribe, voice software, or spellcheck for exams, a student must have formal psycho-educational assessment showing he/she has a learning disability and meets the criteria for eligibility. However, they will be allowed to have more chance of practicing or assessing.
