Sustainability of natural resources
Air pollution
Fossil fuels released harmful chemicals such as soot and dust that harm our atmosphere
Smog contains ozones that includes deadly poisons
Air pollution comes from multiple sources such as power plants, factories, even the furnaces and stoves.
Acid rain is another impact of air pollution that can cause serious damage to our environment
Pollution can come from natural sources such as wildfires, volcanic eruptions and cow burps.
Humans and the environment
During the Industrial Revolution, the human population increased greatly and caused lots of pollution
Using non-renewable resources (e.g. plastic) is causing major problems
For the last 200 years, humans have greatly impacted the environment
Humans can commit on services to help the environment. This is necessary for us to survive
The three ways to help the environment are conserving, chiming in (speaking up), and cleaning up
Natural resources
Anything in nature that people value
Air, water, fossil fuels, plants, and animals are natural resources
There are two types, which are renewable and non-renewable
Reducing, reusing and recycling will conserve our resources
Climate Change
Global warming is caused by more green house gas emissions
The earth's temperature is increase faster than normal
The gases trap the heat on the Earth (known as the Greenhouse effect)
Global change is about the change of the temperature of earth
People using fossil fuels produces more carbon dioxide
Trees remove some of the carbon dioxide by absorbing the carbon molecule out of CO2
Global climate change is causing increased bad weather and diseases, however, we can solve this by
conserving
our reasources
Greenhouse Effect
Greenhouse gases, such as CO2, traps heat on the Earth
However, without any greenhouse gases, Earth would be too cold to live on
Too much greenhouse gases makes the Earth too hot (Global warming)
Temperature increase (global warming) can lead to natural disasters such as floods, storms, hurricanes, etc. It can also create other problems such as diseases.
Greenhouse effect is the warming of the Earth
Humans cause global warming by burning fossil fuels and relying on cows for meat, which can produce methane (CO2 x 20)
Population Growth
Greater population leads to more resources being used up faster and more pollution
In about 10 years, it's expected for the population to grow up to 8 billion people on Earth
About 200 years ago, there was a great surge in the population
Humans need to use more renewable resources
Earth can only support a certain amount of people
Recycling is a beneficial way to conserve our resources
Soil
Erosion moves the sediments into different places. (when small pieces of rocks moves into different environments)
Rocks and humus help plants to sprout and grow
Weathering breaks rocks into small pieces called sediments
Soil has different layers. The top layer contains the most humus, which makes it the darkest layer.
Soil is a mixture of water, soil, and dead species (humus)
Humus/composting helps plants to grow
Plants cannot grow beyond bedrock level, so we must always protect the top soil layer.
