Themes involved with the book Othello
Jealousy
Jealousy affects Othello’s relationship with Desdemona as he believes that she is unfaithful and untrustworthy towards him. As well as when Othello starts to become jealous of Cassio for overthinking that Cassio slept with his wife Desdemona.
Roderigo is also very envious of Othello for marrying Desdemona since Roderigo is in love with her
Not only is Othello insecure and shy about Cassio, Othello thinks that Desdemona would fall in love with Cassio due to his good looks and young attitude which creates and big plot in the story
Appearance Vs Reality
This theme was more represented by Iago, who is driven by his jealousy to achieve his evil motives. He just tricks the other characters into doing things he wants to reach his main goal while they don’t notice.
During Iago’s soliloquy, he mentions about his plan and how much he hates the Moor Othello for pronouncing Cassio as his lieutenant. In the beginning, Iago acts loyal and respectful towards Othello but Iago truly hates the moor. He also talks about tricking Roderigo into giving him easy money
Love
As one of the main themes of Othello, this one was shown from Desdemona. She always expresses her love to her father Brabantio and to her loving husband Othello during court scenes and in bedrooms.
Racism
Already at the beginning of the story, the first scene where Iago and Roderigo go to
Brabantio’s house to warn him about Othello and Desdemona’s marriage. Brabantio mentions about Othello being black which means that he’s low educated and unattractive.
Racism also affects Othello’s insecurities to Desdemona due to how young she is compared to him and as well as how Cassio can steal her heart because of smooth looks
Manipulation
Iago stars this theme the most since most of the characters are exploiting and easy to destroy. Something common in this theme as well as throughout the story is that Iago convinces Othello that Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio when they were only merely talking.
Holes Relationship
Racism
In Holes, racism was shown by Sam when he wasn’t allowed to marry the woman because of his skin color so they killed him which means that in the story Holes, they portrayed racism as a real life struggle that happens very often.
Further to that, Zero was judged by his fellow inmates due to his skin color. They thought he was clueless and quiet unlike normal people that’s why his nickname is Zero which means nothing existing in his mind
Family
The theme family was mostly shown in holes when Stanley and his mom used to write letters everyday to each other just to check in on each other. This shows that this mother and son relationship was strong and healthy except for when Stanley once lied that he was doing alright at camp just to make sure his mom doesn’t worry too much back at home
But in Othello, Desdemona and Brabantio seemed like a normal father and daughter in the old times but that relationship ended when Brabantio was alerted that Othello and Desdemona has secretly married without telling other family first
