SUSTAINABILITY & CONSERVATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Humans and their environment
The 3 things we can do to help the environment are conserving, cleaning up, and chiming in
From the last 200 years, humans have greatly impacted the environment
During the Industrial Revolution, there was more people on Earth which lead to more pollution
Using nonrenewable resources, such as plastic, causes pollution and will eventually out
For our survival, we need to take care of our environment
Natural Resources
Anything in nature that we value
There are many natural resources, such as air, water, soil, etc.
There are 2 types, which are renewable and nonrenewable
Renewable does not mean that it will never run out
We can conserve our resources by changing our habits
Climate Change (aka Global Warming)
Global warming is about the increasing temperature of Earth
Earth's climate changes naturally, but humans are causing it to happen faster
Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, traps heat on the Earth
Burning fossil fuels adds more carbon dioxide to our atmosphere
Cutting down trees stops the Earth from cooling down
Global warming leads to lots of problems, such as bad weather and diseases
We can help to stop global warming by using less fossil fuels, conserving energy, and using renewable resources
Air Pollution
Air pollution can come from different places, such as cars
Burning fossil fuels releases poisonous gases, such as CO2
Air pollution can cause cancer and global warming
Ozone when it's up high protects from the sun, but becomes poisonous when it's near us
Air pollution can mix with clouds to acid rain
Cows produce lots of methane, which is a greenhouse gas
Conserving our resources will cause less air pollution
Greenhouse Effect
Greenhouse effect is the warming of Earth
Greenhouse gases, such as CO2, trap heat on the Earth
Without the greenhouse gases, Earth would be too cold to live on
Too much greenhouse gases can cause global warming
Human are causing global warming
Humans can reduce global warming by burning less fossil fuels and raising less cows (methane)
Population Growth
In about 10 years, there will be more than 8 billion people on Earth
Humans can reduce their use to help with conservation
More humans on Earth is causing more pollution and using our resources faster
Recycling is a good way to conserve our resources
About 200 years ago, the human population increased a lot
Earth can support a certain amount of people
Soil
Soil is a mix of rocks, water, and dead stuff
Weathering breaks rocks into small pieces (sediments)
Erosion moves the sediments to other places
More humus helps the plants to grow
Soil has different layers and the topsoil has the most humus
Plants cannot grow in bedrock, so we must take care of the topsoil
