Safety And Security
Safety Issues :red_cross:
Spyware
What is Spyware?
Spyware is unwanted software that infiltrates your computing device, stealing your internet usage data and sensitive information. Spyware is classified as a type of malware — malicious software designed to gain access to or damage your computer, often without your knowledge.
Possible effect of the security risk
The effects of spyware can vary depending on the software that invades the users' computer. Since spyware is a type of virus it acts like one slowing down the processing speed of a computer, damaging files, and creating pop up ads on websites more frequent.
methods to help remove the security risk
Download and Install Anti-Spyware Software.
Be Cautious When Web Surfing.
Lookout For Pop-Ups.
Keep Current with Operating System Updates.
Apply Patches to Software Installed on Your Computer.
Harden Your Browser Settings.
Enable Your Firewall.
Viruses
What is Virus?
A computer virus is a piece of program code that, like a biological virus, makes copies of itself by attaching itself to another program.
Possible effect of the security risk
Some effects that viruses can have on infected computers include: Annoying pop-up messages on the screen. Clog up the computer so that it slows down and crashes a lot. Delete important files or data.
methods to help remove the security risk
Install Anti-Virus/Malware Software.
Keep Your Anti-Virus Software Up to Date.
Keep Your Operating System Current.
Secure Your Network.
Think before you click
Vishing
What is Vishing?
Vishing (voice or VoIP phishing) is an electronic fraud tactic in which individuals are tricked into revealing critical financial or personal information to unauthorized entities.
Possible effect of the security risk
in some cases, the vishing scammer will attempt to gain access to personal or financial accounts (such as a bank account) in order to steal information or money.
methods to help remove the security risk
Never ever provide your financial detail over phone. A bank will never ask for your account number, credit card number, password or PIN over phone
Do not trust the caller ID of a phone call.
Smishing
What is Smishing?
Smishing is a variant of phishing email scams that instead utilizes Short Message Service (SMS) systems to send bogus text messages.
Possible effect of the security risk
smishing uses cell phone text messages to lure consumers in. Often the text will contain an URL or phone number. The phone number often has an automated voice response system. And again, just like phishing, the smishing message usually asks for your immediate attention.
methods to help remove the security risk
Avoid clicking on any UNKNOWN messages with links. Furthermore, think about who sent you the message. Is it a person that you know?
Do not reply to text messages that have asked you about any of your personal finances.
If the message states " Dear user, congratulations, you have won...." It is a clear sign for smishing and let's be real, nothing is life is free”.
Pharming
What is Pharming?
Pharming is a scamming practice in which malicious code is installed on a personal computer or server, misdirecting users to fraudulent Web sites without their knowledge or consent.
Possible effect of the security risk
In this type of pharming, the hacker sends an email with a code that is able to modify the host files of an individual's computer. Once the host files are infiltrated, they redirect all URLs to a fake website. Even if the user types in the correct URL, the page will redirect
methods to help remove the security risk
Use a trusted, legitimate Internet Service Provider
Better Antivirus software
Double-check the spelling of a website
Check the ‘HTTP‘ address
Hacking
What is Hacking?

methods to help remove the security risk
Create complex passwords.
Don't give out your password.
Change your passwords often.
