Unit 8: Safety and security
Physical security
Health aspects: All computer systems have at least tiltable and anti-glass screens, adjustable chairs and foot supports, suitable lightning and uncluttered work stations as well as frequent breaks and frequent eye tests
Health risk:
Back and neck problems/strain caused by sitting in front of a monitor for long periods in the same position. It could be eliminated by using foot rests to reduce posture problems and use fully adjustable chair to give the correct posture.
Repetitive strain injury. It is when fingers and wrists are damaged because of continuous use of a keyboard and repetitive clicking of mouse buttons. It could be minimised by using ergonomic keyboards and take regular breaks (every 30 minutes) and do some exercise during that break (stretching arms for example.
Eyestrain caused by staring at a computer screen too long or having incorrect lightning in the room. Ways to eliminating it is to change to LCD screens if you are currently using CRT screens where there is less flicker in LCD and try focusing on a point that is certain distance away
Headaches caused by screen reflections and flickering screens. It could be minimized by have an eye test regularly and use window blinds to cut out reflections
Ozone irritation (dry skin and respiratory problems) which caused by laser printers in an office area. It could be minimised by placing laser printer in a designated room and change to inkjet printer if there is enough cost
Safety risks:
Electrocution. It could be minimised by checking equipment on a regular basis, not placing any drinks near computers and check insulation on wires regularly
Trailing wires which cause tripping. Using cable ducts and wireless connections are way to minimise tripping to happen
Heavy equipment falling and causing injury. This could be eliminated by using strong and large desks or table to support hardware as well as so the hardware isn't really close to the edge where it can fall off
Fire risk. This could be minimised by not overloading sockets, having fire extinguishers nearby and make sure that there is a good ventilation in the room as well as the hardware are maintained regularly
E-safety
Keeping personal data like name, address, D.O.B, religion, etc safe on devices such as mobile phone, computer, games console and wireless technology
How to stay safe online:
Don't give out any personal information to any anonymous
Make sure only visiting trusted website (Look for https or the padlock sign)
Make sure that the ISP that we use has an effective email filtering feature to prevent spam
Block and report anybody who acts suspiciously and use inappropriate language
Avoid misusing any images/photos, videos and documents
Always tell an adult to meet someone for the first time on our own
Always use appropriate language and respect other user
Risks when playing an online game
There are predators that prey on other
Cyber-bullying between each gamer might occur
Viruses, phishing and spyware might happen to our computer
Security risks
Hacking
is the act of gaining unauthorised access to a computer system. This can lead to identity theft or misuse of personal information. Data can also be deleted, changed or corrupted on a user's computer. This could be minimised by using firewalls, changing password regularly and using intrusion detection software
Phishing
is when sender sends out legitimate-looking emails to target users. As soon as the recipient clicks on a link in the email or attachment, they are sent to a fake website or fooled into giving personal data in replying to the email. This usually come from bank.
This can lead to fraud. By do not clicking on executable attachments that has .exe, or .bat ending, we could minimise the risk of getting phished
Pharming
is when malicious code installed on a user's computer or on a web server, it will redirect the user to fake website. The creator could gain personal data and this lead to identity theft. By using anti-spyware software that can identify and remove pharming code from computer. Pharming would be minimised
Viruses
is a program code or software that can replicate/copy itself with the intention of deleting and corrupting files on a computer that cause malfunction. It can delete files or data within the computer and caused computer to crash. This could be minimised by not using software from unknown sources and installing anti virus software and update it when it asks to do so.
