1.4b Network performance
Speed
Network speed is measured in bits per second, also known as bit rate.
-
Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the maximum possible amount of data being transmitted across a network. Its the total amount of data being transmitted during an amount of time.
If you have one user downloading a film it will download very fast but other nodes will be very slow as they will just have whats left.
-
If I'm the only person on a network I will get the maximum speed of the network if there's 2 people the bandwidth will be shared. Bandwidth doesn't share equally.
-
-
Contention ratio
Its how many people share bandwidth with. If you have a broadband you will share this with around 30 people and you only get a slice of that maximum speed. If there is a windows update on all 30 users the bandwidth will go down and your WiFi will become very slow.

Latency
Network latency is a concept is how long it takes for a packet of data from a node to a certain destination any if you play any kind of game lets say Call of duty. A packet of data gets sent from the computer to the games server but someone else will also send a packet of data to the games server. Who ever has a lower latency, their data packet will reach the games server first. The lower the latency the faster the packet of data travels. Latency is measured in milliseconds. Data is transmitted through the network through packets of data not singular data.
