introduction to networks
Freedom of Movement
You can authenticate by logging in to the system from any device, so you can access any file no matter how important when and wherever you want.
-
Backups can be made centrally. Instead of having to go to each individual machine, technicians can make backups directly from the file server. This is done because it saves a lot of time to ensure that all of the work is backed up.
Advantages of LAN
Able to share resources. So if you have a file on the LAN then anyone that is connected to access that.
Also the network can check if you are an authentic user of the network because if you are not then you cannot access any of the contents/data on the network. Also if you are connected to the network then you can access it from any device that you can use.
-
LAN
-
It is a network that can connect the devices that are only nearby and they cannot connect to nodes that are far away. E.g. one LAN can cover the school that you are in so the servers are all yours.
-
-
It is a limited geographical sized network, that can be made to the size of how big the network needs to be.
-
Networks
A computer network is where loads of nodes are connected together these can be wired or wireless, and you are able to share resources together, e.g. a printer.
Instead of having a printer with every computer, you can link up lots of computers to just one printer.
-
Some examples of nodes are: a printer, a computer, a phone, a tablet and in some cases you could have a smart TV.
Backups
-
If you lose the data then the company that has just lost that data/contents then it will be very expensive.
Backup is when you make more copies of the data so that if you lose one then you can still have more copies of it.
If there is a virus or something like that then the company will lose all of the data that is on that system.
Only authenticated users can only access the backed up files, because only if they lose their original files.
Software
An addition benefit about a LAN is that you can install a whole another software. You can also do it all in one go.
As long as you have the permissions then you can download what ever you need to download to put it onto a a whole another computer.
A site licence is when you pay for the rights to own a piece of software that gets discounted if you buy for,e.g. a school to use Microsoft word.
A single user licence is when you buy the rights to some software that you are able to use,e.g. if you buy FIFA 20 you don't own FIFA you just own the rights to the software that you bought.
-
WAN
-
An example of this is the Newbury Academy Trust has lots of school that all have their our LAN, so if we came to a decision that we wanted to join them together then that would be called a WAN.
The reason that people do this is that they can share resources with each other and this can be from London all the way to New York.
