- - - - His parents decide they should dispose of him before the prophecy comes true. They give Oedipus to one of their servants. The servant must pin his ankles and leave the baby stranded on top of Mount Cithaeron.
        
        After Oedipus is abandoned a shepherd finds him and couldn't leave the child to die so he takes it home to care for it.
        
        That shepherd later gives Oedipus away to a second shepherd for him to raise as a shepherd.
        
        That second shepherd gives Oedipus to Polybus and Merope, the King and Queen of Corinth, Greece.
        
        In Corinth, he goes to see an oracle and hears of his prophecy. That being the same one his parents were told years ago. He thinks this means he is going to kill King Polybus and marry Merope. To avoid this prophecy from coming true he does not return to Corinth but instead travels towards Thebes.
        
        It is on his journey to Thebes that he encounters another party of travelers at a crossroad. This party harassed him and in self-defense, Oedipus killed them all. At this time he did not know that the leader of the party was King Laius of Thebes, also his father.
