Rocksanne :fire: :check:
Sedimentary :
formed by the accumulation or deposition of small particles and subsequent cementation of mineral or organic particles on the floor of oceans or other bodies of water at the Earth's surface.
Sandstone
-
-
Durable and hard, fine grained
-
eroded by acid rain, calcium carbonate dissolves
Limestone
-
-
-
-
eroded by acid rain, weak carbonic acid erodes calcite
metamorphic :fire: :were once igneous or sedimentary rocks, but have been changed (metamorphosed) as a result of intense heat and/or pressure within the Earth's crust
marble
forms when limestone is subjected to the heat and pressure,
Marble is made of calcium carbonate (fizzes with acid). medium-grained, large crystals
-
white= rathlin island, red= cork, black= kilkenny, green= connemara
Quartzite
-
hard rock, non foliated, large grains

igneous :star:
intrusive:
granite: minerals=mica quartz and feldspar, coarse grained rock resistant to erosion. cools slowly= formation of large crystals, high demand in construction industry, eg. wicklow mountains
-
basalt: 90% of extrusive igneous rock. lava exposed to air and cools and solidifies. hard rock black dark grey, cools rapidly =small crystals. when weathered forms fertile soil. eg. giants causway
Basalt forms when lava reaches the Earth's surface at a volcano or mid ocean ridge. The lava is between 1100 to 1250° C when it gets to the surface. It cools quickly, within a few days or a couple weeks, forming solid rock. Very thick lava flows may take many years to become completely solid
Most intrusive rocks have large, well-formed crystals.
Intrusive, or plutonic, igneous rocks form when magma cools slowly below the Earth's surface.
