Atomic structure
Electrons
Negative charge
-1
Very small
Neutrons
Neutral charge
1 mass
Protons
Positive charge
+1
1 mass
Same number of electrons as protons in an element
To make sure the element has no overall charge
Isotopes have the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons
Which changes the atomic mass of the element
The atomic mass = the total number of protons added to the total number of neutrons.
History of the periodic table
Dimitri Mendeleev
Started developing the periodic table creating a rough example putting the elements in order of there atomic mass
He predicted the discovery of other elements in the future
He left sapaces within his periodic table for them to go.
Arranged in groups and periods
Groups are vertical
periods are horizontal
Now put in order of their atomic numbers
They are grouped via their chemical properties.
