        Fluoro for needle placement.
        
        Puncture of subarachnoid space.
        
        Lumbar L3/L4 ; cervical C1/C2
        
        Prone or left lateral position.
        
        Needle placement verified by backflow of CSF.
        
        Pressure taken.
        
        Samples collected and labelled.
        
        LUMBAR PUNCTURE TECHNIQUE
        
        easiest site to perform.
        
        Pt sitting and leaning forward, legs over the far side and arms crossed on a pillow across knees.
        
        Pt also can be positioned in the prone or lateral decubitus
        
        The needle no greater than 22G to reduce CSF leakage after it has been withdrawn.
        
        Once CSF is obtained, the needle is advanced a further 2 mm to ensure that all the bevel is within the subarachnoid space.

        45 DEGREE RPO & LPO ( to see nerve roots)
        
        Lateral
        
        Lateral in flexion/ extension ( to see posterior disc protrusion and any spinal instability.
