American west unit 3

the exoduter movement

this was a mass migration of African Americans from the southern states where they were used for slavery.

by 1870 the KKK was in nearly every southern state and African americans had to share cropping which meant they couldn't buy there own land or crops so they had to share crops and profit

so eventually they moved to Kansas where they could own land and have control of there own crops and profit

the Oklahoma land rush

this was a day were you could go claim a bit of land by putting your flag on it

it took place on April 1889. the tickets were $14. up to 60,000 people went to claim a bit of the 2 million acres of land that was up for grabs

the town of Edmond went from a population of 3 to 150 people

the end of the open range

the open range is unfenced land keeping large herds of cattle on public land.

some reasons for the end of the open rage was because of the invention of refrigerated railway carts made by gustav swift. this meant the cattle meat could be transported easier and didn't need the cattle roaming and to take it on a land trail to get to where it needed to be sold

there was also too much pressure on the grass/land and the drought of 1833 led to the cattle not having a lot of grass to eat. this also made land hard to harvest and to build on so homesteader found it hard to live on

Lincoln county war

a business called " the house " was stealing cattle and was also incharge of the county. a rival business also opened by tunstall

Tunstall hired cowboys to help protect his business but on February 1878 he was murdered and his cowboys including billy the kid

the regulators took the law into there own hands and killed the sheriff brady and his deputy. it escalated and around 19 people were killed in this conflict

billy the kid went on the run after this but was caught and was sentenced to be hung but killed the guards

the Johnson county war

cattle barons blamed homesteaders of cattle rustling and lynched Ella wantons and Jim avieral

cattle barons decided hat they would attacked the kc ranch but word got out that they were headed for the town of buffalo so they were prepared when they turned up

it backfired and when the cattle barons turned up they were attacked by 300 men . they were only saved when the US Calvary arrived

they went to trial but didn't get convicted and cattle barons never had the same amount of power

Battle of little big horn

the US wanted gold that was on the native Americans land but 7,000 Indianans camped on the black hills and refused to move

the Indians initially won the conflict because the white Americans didn't expect that many Indians and they killed 200 us army but they US sent for another 2,500 solider which ultimately killed all the sioux

sitting bull and crazy horse both ran away and the Sioux that survived got split and were made more american

one of the reason the us lost in the first place was because of Custer he only had 100 men and ignored all of the offers to send extra men and weapons . He split hes troops in half and sent them to attack the camp even after being told not to because he's troops were exhausted

ghost dance

a holy man received a vison that a Indian messiah was coming and that the Indians had to dance the ghost dance and then all of the buffalo and the dead would come back and the white Americans would disapear

this spread fast but the Indians had spy's who worked for the us army and they treated it as a war. they tried to arrest sitting bull but one of his own accidently shot him.

wounded knee

on the 28 December the army caught up with big foot and they were moved to a camp and the army was sent to disarm the Sioux and one of the leader resisted and confusion spread and firing started

by the time firing stopped 140 Indians and this massacre ended the plains wars

after sitting bull was shot many of hes followers joined the band of big foot . he was another leader who was taking part in the dance but the US army was also moving to arrest him aswell
