The Ice Age
When long periods of freezing weather occurred on Earth
Land Bridges
A strip of land connecting two continents
Began 1.6 millions years ago
ice sheets were formed from the ocean water - oceans levels were lowered than they are now
Some scientists believe that the ocean level dropped and exposed a land bridge that connected Asia to North America
Settling New Lands
Migration around the world took hundred of thousands of years
Hominids went from Africa to Asia two million years ago
Humans went from East Africa to Southern Africa
From northern Asia people moved to North America
By 9000 BC humans lived on all continents except Antartica
As humans began to migrate around the world, earlier hominid died out
Clothing and Shelter
To keep warm people learned to sew animals skins together to make clothing
Some people lived in caves but others built shelters

Other people built more permanent houses out of stone, wood, and clay.
Even bones of large animals were used to make structures
As people moved around they had to adapt to different environments
When people didn't have caves accessible they built shelters
New Tools and Technologies
People found more uses for bone and stone tool
People developed smaller and more complex tools
