HISTORICAL MODELS OF THE UNIVERSE (GROUP 13; Maria Serra, Duna Codinachs, Laura Tió i Abril Baquero)
THE GEOCENTRIC THEORY
Small holes: are stars
Earth: center of the universe.
The moon, the sun, Venus, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn: fixed onto transparent spheres, and rotate around the Earth and protects from the eternal fire.
The name of the planets come from teh roman gods mythology:
Jupiter: Thor
Venus: Frigg
Mercury: Woden
Saturn: Don't have god
Mars: Tiu
The name of the days in english come from the name of the planets/gods:
Thursday: Thor
Friday: Frigg
Wednesday: Odin
Saturday: Saturn
Tuesday: Tiu
Sunday: Sun
Monday: Moon
5 elements:
Air
Fire
Earth
Water
And the fifth element: aether
Ptolemy's model
Improved on aristotile's model in order to explain the retrogade motion of the planets
Sometimes the planets go backwards for a time
Planets are set in moving spheres.
All the spheres turn consistently , each at their own speed
The most important work of Ptolemy's was Almagestum
The sixteenth century, become so complicated that it was UNMANAGEABLE
Copernicus' Model
Sun: center of the universe
Earth: like the other planets
Planets are similars to the Earth
Plants: around the Sun/circular paths
Moon: NOT a planet
Important work is the "Revolutionibus orbium coelestium"
Stars: stationary
Moon: arounds the Earth
Kepler's model
Planets: follow slightly elliptical pahts
Sun: focuses of each ellipse
Planets: didn't have a uniform motion
Celestial bodies were neither circular not uniform
NO spheres of the planets
Planets: don't move at a constant speed
Important work for cosmology was "Astronomia nova"
Artistotle's model
