Teacher as mediator of learning
mediation = any interaction in which an adult intends to convey a particular meaning/ skill & encourages child to transcend
interacting with intention, meaning, & transcendance
aim of expanding cognitive capacity of learner
developed by Feuerstein -- mediator (parent/teacher) provides suitable stimulus (e.g. question) to which learner responds
responce elicits further interaction - until their is satisfaction with the learning experience
teacher mediates both academic & social learning
Teacher as interpreter & designer of learning programmes + materials
teachers should be able to understand & interpret the provided learning programme as well as design original learning programmes
should identify requirements for specific context of learning & prepare suitable resources for learning
should be flexible in selection, sequencing & pacing of learning skills & content; accomodating content as well as diverse needs of learners
Teacher as leader, administrator & manager
teachers must make decisions appropriate to the level of their learners
manage & organise effectively for diverse modes of learning in classroom
execute administrative tasks & participate in school decision-making structures

Teacher as an assessor
teacher must be familiar with contents of CAPS

authentic assessments integral part of learning support -- used to encourage questioning & promote learning
Teacher as community & citizen member, & pasterol caregiver
teachers ought to promote & practice ritical, ethical stance with regard to respecful, responsible citizenship
constitution, democratic values & practices should be upheld in schools & societies
involvement & participation of parent & community is crucial -- acknowledged as assets
pastoral caregivers - teachers should be supportive when learner seems to display needs of emotional/ physical nature
Teacher as student, researcher & lifelong learner
responsibility for change & transformation in education lies in teacher
dynamic teachers ought to be lifelong learners
identify skills needed to teach a diversity of learners & proceed to seek ways of adding these skills to their repertoire by means of further studies
initiate change by means of collaboration, mediation etc.

teachers should be well grounded in principles, skills, methods, procedures, etc. relevant to their subject & phase of study
