Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports for Challenging Students
Defiant Student Scenario
Situation: You have a 9th grade student in your classroom that is disrespectful to their peers and to yourself. The student has a hard time staying in their seats and creates distractions in the classroom.
Tier 1
At this stage try multiple intervention strategies. These strategies should last for at least 4 weeks. If student shows no signs of progress after 6 months, move onto Tier 2.
Use a calm, neutral tone when addressing the student.
Speak with the student outside in the hallway.
Frequent home contact: Inform the parents the student behavior in the classroom and any signs of improvements.
Praise when the student shows the desired behavior in the classroom.
Data Tracking: Daily Positive Behavior Tracking Form.
The student carries this form to each class for the teacher fill out. The form has a set target area for the desired behavior level.

Data Tracking: School Counseling Behavior Form

Assign Verbal Cues and Signals to let the student know when they are off task
Establish a Behavior Contract.

Tier 3
Peer Tutoring. Allows the student to work in a quiet, safe environment where they are allowed to focus.

Student with Anxiety
Situation: You have a 11th grade student in your classroom that suffers from Anxiety attacks. Whenever they are in a stressful situation, such as a test or a large class, they are unable to focus and start to feel uncomfortable. This student has a hard time paying attention in class and frequently asks how to do tasks.
Tier 1
At this stage try multiple intervention strategies. These strategies should last for at least 4 weeks. If student shows no signs of progress after 6 months, move onto Tier 2.
Have the student listen to music to help take their mind off of the busy classroom environment.
Have the student take frequent breaks by walking around or standing up to help ease their stress
Talk to the student's parent and inform them on the situation. Develop strategies that will help their child in the classroom
Data Tracking: Self - Monitoring Assignment Sheet
. Student with anxiety sometimes have a hard time keeping track of their assignments as they can be overwhelming. This allows the student to break up their assignments day by day and track their progress.
Practice deep breathing exercises
Tier 2
Self - Monitoring. This will help the student increase their productivity and allow the student to become aware of the actions they need to take in the classroom
Peer Tutoring
Data Tracking: Weekly Scatter Plot
. This method allows the student to plan out their day, much like they would with a planner. The student will be able to break up their assignments day by day and prepare for any upcoming assignments.
