WEEK 2
vernacular typography - The language or dialect spoken by the ‘ordinary’ people in a particular country or region.
Type vs Lettering
-
Lettering - is a one-off, created for a specific purpose and capable of responding to the demands of scale, material and surroundings
Vernacular (lettering) - Lettering traditions to have emerged from regional practice. Usually concerned with the ordinary
rather than the monumental. Can also much more broadly refer to ‘untutored practice’.

FURTHER IDEAS
Moving into some further ideas for the super project, I believe that Vernacular typography/lettering could be a way to experiment with typefaces. In reference to what Vernacular typography means, I wish to research further into type in particular countries/regions.
One way I could do this is by looking at stereotypes, and how people perceive a language. For instance, often people presume Russian to sound harsh; so how would this translate to lettering, would to font be bold and sharp? However, if I were to pursue this route, I would need to be considerate of the way in which stereotypes might misconstrue.
Alternatively, I could look into branding a country through typography. While I would be able to explore similar concepts, I wouldn’t simply be referring to stereotypes.
