The Bullies (the busy bees)
Tier 1
Personal
These are suggested Tier 1 actions to be taken to the individual or individuals who are causing the problem
Class wide
Stop, Walk and Talk Technique
Take Away Unstructured/Free Time
Teach Conflict Resolution Skills
Teach Relationship Skills
At the Tier 1 Level, think of doing relationship skills lessons and interventions for the whole class or groups
As a class talk about good interactions between people. model good behavior. Talk about building and developing relationships such as friendships.
At the Tier 1 Level, think of doing conflict resolution lessons and interventions for the whole class or groups
Talk to the class, discuss things such as stop walk and talk. discuss recognizing bullying and to self check. Discuss empathy and how others may feel.
When students are reporting they are being bullied/ or you witness this behavior start taking away privileges and free time.
This is a technique for students tor students to use when dealing with bullies. 1st talk to the bully and ask them to stop. 2nd walk away, do not let the bully to continue to interact with you. 3rd Talk to a teacher, guardian, administrator. This is the recommended actions for students to take if they feel they are being bullied
These are things that can be addressed to the entire class.
Tier 2
Classroom Management Support
When Tier 1 classroom management support is not working, reduce the benefits given to students and increase the consequences for bad behavior. It is important to make it know that this is not a power struggle, but at the same time be more strict. disruptive classes do not get fun rewards. Take away privileges and rewards until behavior improves. When students start behaving better start reintroducing privileges and rewards.
Alternatives To Suspension
Instill all the methods and techniques from Tier 1. Your goal as a teacher is to be the least disruptive to the class environment and to instill a good flow. When a student is suspended they will be removed from class and thus not be receiving instruction. Suspension should always be a last resort.
Teach Conflict Resolution Skills
At the Tier 2 level, think of doing conflict resolution lessons and interventions for groups and individuals
Now you are focusing on specific students or groups of students. Make sure you are talking to both bullies and victims. Both should know how to resolve conflict, even if a victim doesn't initiate they should not perpetuate or encourage any kind of conflict.
Teach Relationship Skills
At the Tier 2 level, think of doing relationship skills lessons and interventions for groups and individuals
Again we are focusing on specific students or groups of students. We are trying to get these students to act in a civil manner towards each other. At this point we may not be trying to make the students to become friends but more to have them coexist and not bother each other.
Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
when a single student has trouble controlling them self create a meeting and make a behavior plan. start creating written plans and implement daily self checks
Behavior Contract
The behavior contract allows you to discuss with the student what is and isn't acceptable. It will outline clear expectations with clear consequences for not meeting those expectations. The contract can also outline goals and allow time for the student to adjust and assimilate into the class culture.
Check In Check Out (CICO)
This is a way to help the student achieve their behavior contract goals. By checking in every day the student can share any problems they are having that day and discuss them with the teacher. The teacher can then help the student make a goal specific for the day.
At the end of the day the teacher and student can review how the day went and if the student achieved the goals they set for them self.
Daily Behavior Form
The daily behavior form is an alternative to check in's and check outs. This form has students self assess how they behaved that day in class. How are they doing on their behavior contract? Are they accomplishing their goals?
Tier 3
Teach Conflict Resolution Skills
At the Tier 3 level, think of customizing specific conflict resolution lessons and interventions for specific students
Teach Relationship Skills
At the Tier 3 level, think of customizing specific relationship skills lessons and interventions for specific students
Combine multiple methods
Sometimes it will not take just one method but a combination
Time outs
Have the student remove them self, may it be from the cause of their distraction or even from class itself. By removing them self they can collect their thoughts and realize their behavior. maybe there is a stimulus that is causing their behavior and by removing them self they can also separate them self from the stimulus.
mentoring
Sometimes other students can share some insight on how to act. A student who has had problems in the past can assist a student currently having problems and help them find ways of dealing
There are extreme steps that can be taken when nothing else has worked.
Counselor Referral
This needs to be done with explicit parental/guardian approval. When a student is severely having trouble in class and there may be external forces that may be driving their behavior.
Collaboration With Student’s Physician And/Or Mental Health Provider
Also needs explicit parental/guardian approval. When a student has a known behavioral or mental condition then coordinating with medical providers can help create an environment that is beneficial for the student and the class.
Talk One On One With Student
Move To A New Location In The Classroom
Change the seat of the student(s) who are causing problems. If needed create an entire class seating chart
Have a discussion with the student(s) about what is happening in class. Make it clear that their behavior is not acceptable
