Cohesiveness, meaning the degree in which members feel a connection with one another is a cornerstone of group success. Groups with a high level of cohesiveness spend more time interacting, learning things about one another, resulting in positive and pleasant feelings, resulting in greater loyalty. It enables people to build resilience when times get tough, sticking together with keeping people coming back. This is all not to say that cohesiveness is infallible. It can be used for negative reasons, such as being disruptive in the workplace, complaining about a supervisor or manager, eliciting behaviors such as protests or spending hours of work chatting up others about complaints instead of working. Cohesiveness and productivity work hand in hand, however there needs to be a limit to how far one allows their relationships to blossom. Two members may harbor mutual attraction, resulting in group meetings turning into friends hanging out, joking around. Being able to separate one's personal from business life is imperative to a groups success when the time calls for it. There are eight factors a group should take into account when reaching goals: focusing on shared compatible goals.Compatible goals elicits the idea that a bond is there, uniting them under a goal. This extends to recognizing the necessary progress towards a goal. For a healthy dynamic, establishing shared norms and values are essential. Members that stubbornly hold onto differing ideas of what is acceptable and what isn't, the group will likely fail and split apart. A healthy dynamic extends to minimizing perceived threats between members. At times competition arises in a group which can be destructive, or there will be a disagreement as to who the leader should be. Whether or not threats are real or imagined, they need to be addressed immediately to reduce the chance of lesser cohesion. This can be extended to threats outside of a group that may jeopardize the group staying together. Realizing one job can be done by one individual, instead of being pushy, insisting to help is also important, respecting their interdependence. Developing friendships aids in cohesiveness when it comes to people enjoying each other's company which extends to sharing experiences. Times of hardship brings people closer together.
