Civics and Citizenship Concepts
Democracy
A democracy is a system of government run by the people, for the people. People get to vote and have more of a say
Democratic Values
Democratic values are the beliefs and ideals that are held by our society as a democracy. Such values include respect, equality, fairness and freedom
The Westminster System
Australia’s system of government is based on the Westminster system. The Westminster system is a form of parliamentary government originating in the United Kingdom.
Participation
The concept of participation is an important part of living in a democracy. It refers to the way good citizens contribute to or take part in society. In Australia, we participate in the running of society in several ways, such as by voting in an election or referendum, serving on a jury or paying taxes. These things help our government to deliver services to our community, which we in turn will benefit from
Rights and Responsibilities
The concept of rights and responsibilities refers to our entitlements and duties as citizens. The rights and responsibilities we experience in Australia are an important part of living in a democracy. Our rights ensure we can have a say in the way our country is run and are treated fairly in the process
Justice
The concept of justice can have many different dentition. The idea of justice can mean different things to people from different societies and cultures. For some it might mean payback, while for others it might mean fairness. However, the concept of justice in Australia ultimately means that people should treat each other in a manner that is fair and balanced
Laws
Criminal Laws
Criminal laws are serious laws that require serious punishments. Some of the laws committed could be murder, Drug trafficking and many more. These are to be dealt with imprisonment, usually for a long time.
Civil Law
Civil laws are to protect individuals. If you hurt yourself in a registration area without any warning you can put in a lawsuit and sue them for damages they have caused you. If your injury is really bad and need medical attention 24/7 you get more money in compensation.
Common law
common law is when new and unusual cases come up and the statuary law doesn't know how to deal with it so a judge from the superior court has to make a decision on how to resolve it. This is called a precedent

Freedom of Speech
means that people can express their opinions by their voice, as long it doesn't offend anyone. It is protected by the bounds of law. Which means it will be treated by the law
Freedom of Association
You are able to unite in a group that is legal such as a workers union
Freedom of assembly
The right to be able to gather in a group to protest about a political reason. If there is no discrimination or violence it is fine but if their is, it will be dealt with the bounds of law.
Freedom of Religion
Anyone with a Visa that enters Australia is allowed to practise their religions. There must be no sort of discrimination against them since it is their right
Freedom of Movement
It means you are allowed to travel anywhere you want legally. there is no discrimination about race, etc to enter the country
Bounds of the Law
all together our rights are limited thanks to Bounds of law. This is a good thing though. It makes sure we don't break the law in order to express our freedoms of speech, association, religion, assembly or movement
Australian Identity
Australia has a really unusual Identity. Non-Australians think that we ride kangaroos to school which we don't. It is also known as Stereotypes. Aussies love their 'Barbies' (Barbecue) etc. This is our culture, it can be slightly modified from each country by their stereotypical thoughts
Mateship
Mateship is the big relationships between friends. It is based on loyalty and to rely on each other through tough times. Australia would of never got through World War 1 without mateship. We trusted out mates to cover us or protect out back in the dark.
Our Changing Identity
Back before the rest of the world thought Australia existed, there were these group of people called the Aboriginals. These people lived in Australia about 60,000 years before the settlers came. When the settlers came they killed them of and taking their land since they had different skin tones and back then they were treated bad. This was known as a bad time for Australia. About know we are letting people from every walk of life into Australia. We are now known as a diverse country now, not letting race, sexual orientation, and religion determine peoples rights in Australia
Active Participation
Voting
As a democratic country it is vital for all citizens to vote. You can vote the next prime minister, or even a supermarket or something in your local region. Voting is very significant to Australia because it is fair and goes of percentage of those voted with or against
Become Informed
Being informed is a very important or significant role in voting. It lets people know what the issues are for what they are voting for. it is very easy to be informed now since the use of technology. It could be passed around by Television or old school, by paper.
Direct Action
Direct action is when people rally up (such as protests) to raise awareness about political problems. This is also known as non-violent resistance. This has been used in the past to gain attention for many different occasions.
Lobby Groups
Lobby groups are another way to raise attention for problems. it involves working on behalf of a case to change or influence political decisions.
Australian Values
Freedom
Is being able to make decisions. You can make whatever decisions you want in your life, like what job to do, or what sport to play. It is entirely up to you.
Equality
Equality in Australia is to Treat everyone the same or fair. You may participate in your voting etc without discrimination towards you. As Australia we promote this but there are still people in our country that are racist or sexist towards people which Australia is not about.
A Fair go
Everyone deserves a fair chance to succeed. Such as edication or getting employed. Everybody deserves this no matter their race, sexual orientation etc.
Compassion
Compassion is our response to people who are suffering. We can respond to it by setting up medical centres, education or aged care, or disability centres.
Inclusion
Inclusion is to let people in. It could mean to come into Australia or join a club. No matter who they are they are allowed to be included in anything they wish.
Responsibility
it means we take ownership of our decision. If you do something bad like break a law you have to take responsibility for it. This may mean to pay a fine or get imprisoned. Responsibility is taking part for what you do. Littering is something most people do but they expect us to pick it up. Its not our responsibility its theirs.
