Civil War
1861-1865
Black soldiers served in artillery and infantry and performed all noncombat support functions that sustain an army, as well.
Spanish- American War
1898
Over 17,000 black soldiers served in the Spanish-American War. African-Americans were not permitted to lead troops as officers even though they had proven their capabilities as fighting men.
WWI
1917-1918
African American males from all over the country eagerly joined the war effort. They viewed the conflict as an opportunity to prove their loyalty, patriotism, and worthiness for equal treatment in the United States.
WWII
1941-1945
African-American soldiers played a significant role in World War II. The Vietnam War was the one war in which blacks did it all. They were the generals, they flew the airplanes, they drove the tanks, they were in combat units, they led troops in battle.
Current Wars
2009- Present
African Americans has been limited to the active-duty force. The reserve components—on which the military has been extremely dependent during operations in Iraq—have a much smaller proportion of African Americans.4
