The Earths Structure
Oceanic Crust (Thin)
Oceanic Crust is 6-10 km thick
On top sedimentary rock beneath this blanket is ancient, heavy, igneous rocks
The rocks of oceanic crust are often known as Sima
Crust: Made of solid rocks and minerals.
Mantle: Makes up over 75% of the Earths Volume and consists of several layers of rocks.
Core: Extremely hot with temperatures ranging up to 6,000 degrees
Outer Core: Molten or liquid
Inner Core: Solid under intense pressure
Continental Crust (Thick)
30 km thick where continents were stretched. 60km in mountain belts squashed together.
Made of younger lighter rocks such as granite.
Often referred to as sial
The submerged area of continental crust is known as the continental shelf.
The Lithosphere and Asthenosphere
Lithosphere composed of crust and upper section of mantle . Averaging 100 km in thickness. The rocks can bend but cant flow
Asthenosphere :Found below the lithosphere. Rocks partially melted here. Rocks are able to flow here.
The Earths Layers: The Earth is around 4.6 billion years old.
The Earths Crust: Two Types= this oceanic crust and thick continental crust.
The boundary where the crust meets the uppermost mantle is called the Moho
