Introduction to the Unit Project- Go Green: Learning How to Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse With this Project Based Learning (PBL) lesson, children of Grades 1 and 2 will learn about recycling, reducing, and reusing certain products to promote a healthy planet. Students will examine how mankind's actions directly effect the environment and understand how each person plays an important role in preserving our Earth. The children will undertake such activities as making a mini newsreel movie, research different types of materials, interview local environmentalists, create poems or songs, document their own contributions to recycling and waste at home and make posters to encourage others to think about protecting our environment. Students will complete activities to establish a good understanding of recycling, reusing, and reducing everyday materials and products. Each activity will unveil a new perspective and angle or will further develop on ideas and solutions already examined. It is important to remember that this PBL lesson is designed for young children aged 5 to 7. The overall goal is instill in young children a basic comprehension of waste management and recycling common products to promote a greener planet. Go green!
