5% of S Aureus secrete 1 or 2 of toxins that cause SSS
both toxins affect keratinized cells
epidermis unaffected
body restores lost epidermis in 7-10 days
blood carries toxin throughout body

circulation of toxins
death is rare
primarily disease of infants and children
can affect elderly and immunocompromised
transmission
person to person
diagnosis
distinctive sloughing of skin
treatment
IV drugs nafcillin or oxacillin
Impetigo
contagious disease
signs and symptoms
small flat red patches
vesicle ooze
pus filled
form thick scabs
intense itching
numerous vesicles with different stages
when spread to lump nodes triggers pain and inflammation called erysipelas
most caused by S. aureus
Violence factors
M protein
interfere with phagocytes
hyaluronic acid
serves as camo
pyrogenic toxins
stimulate macrophages and helper t cells
occasionally colonize skin and invade through open wounds
children often effected just below nose
spread person to person or fomites
erysipelas occur mostly in children and elderly
diagnosis vesicle observation
treatment oral/topical antimicrobial
prevent with good hygiene
