Disease of poxvirus
Poxviruses are DNA viruses.
Produce various proteins that interfere with the immune response.
Viruses spread from the respiratory tract through the body.
Other poxviruses are spread by direct contact.
Orthopoxviruse (variola virus) causes smallpox.
Herpes Infections
slow-spreading skin lesions
Herpetic gingivostomaitis, whitlow, herpes gladiatorum.
recurrence of lesions is common.
painful lesions caused by inflammation and cell death.
Warts
benign epithelial growths on the skin or mucous membranes.
papillomaviruses cause warts
warts develop several months after infection.
Chickenpox
highly contagious
Characterized by lesions on the back and trunk that spread across the body.
Virus becomes latent within sensory nerves.
Shingles
Occurs following reactivation of the virus.
Lesions are localized to skin along an infected nerve.
pain may last after lesions have healed.
Varicella-zoster virus causes both diseases.
