occured at the fault that runs through Haiti along the north american and the carribbean transform plate boundary
focus was 10km below the surface [shallow earthquake]. the main shocks were followed by more than 50 aftershocks. some measuring 6 on the richter scale. the last aftershocks took place 6 days after.
plates were locked and stress had built up for 250 years [since the last earthquake]. the energy was released as seismic waves when the plates ruptured.the rupture was 40km deep and 2km wide
immediate effects:

more than 300,00 people were killed by falling rubble. tens of thousands were injured

infrastructure was damaged too. [roads, train tracks, along with phone and internet connections]
short term response:

food and water supplies were airlifted into the country although the damaged infrastructure made this difficult . At one stage food was being provided for up to 2 million people each day.
temporary accomodation camps were set up but were unable to cope with the huge numbers of people. some moved to rural areas.
fund-raisers organised humanitarian organisations. the money raised was used to improve sanitation, provide food,aid and rebuild buildings.
long term impacts:

international aid pledges from more than 130 countries had exceeded over 6 billion dollars. however, full reconstruction costs were estimated at 12 billion. the problem for haiti lis in sourcing further investment and in eventually repaying this money
