TRAFALGAR BATTLE
WHEN? 21 october of 1805
WHY? The French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was preparing to invade England. He had already taken over other parts of Europe and wanted to expand his empire. The two sides were in pursuit of each other, then they met up at Trafalgar.
WHERE? Cape Trafalgar on the coast of south west Spain.
BATTLE
WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE BATTLE? During five hours of fighting, the British destroyed the enemy fleet, destroying 19 enemy ships. No British ships were lost, but 1,500 British seamen were killed or wounded in the heavy fighting.
WHO WON THE BATTLE?
The battle ended with a clear victory for the British forces. This allowed Britain to become the world's largest sea power for 100 years.
WHAT WAS THE MISTAKE COMMITED BY THE SPANISH/FRENCH FLEET?
Having spotted the enemy, the Gaul commander ordered his ships to turn round. The decision has been qualified as a failure that condemned the fleet.
The gunners failed on:
- not shooting quick enough
- rough seas made firing mode difficult
- not been trained enough

BRITISH SIDE: it was commanded by Horatio Nelson.
SPANISH/FRENCH SIDE: it was commanded by Pierre Charles Silvestre de Villeneuve
CONSEQUENCES
For the British side:
- Great naval victory
- 22 ships captured or destroyed
- The threat of invasion was gone
- They had absolute power over seas
- Nelson died in the battle
For the Spanish/French side:
- End of maritime power for Spain
- No fleet preserved the American colonies
- Napoleon still held much of Europe
