- - - - Acetylcholine binds itself to receptors on the outside of the muscle fiber which then causes muscle contraction and movement.
        
        Steps:
        
        1.) Open channels allow an influx of sodium ions into the cytoplasm of the muscle fiber.
        
        2.) The sodium influx also sends a message within the muscle fiber to trigger the release of stored calcium ions.
        
        3.) The calcium ions diffuse into the muscle fiber.
        
        4.) The relationship between the chains of proteins within the muscle cells changes, leading to the contraction.

        If Clostridium tetani spores are deposited in a wound, the neurotoxin interferes with nerves that control muscle movement.

      - Death
        
        Severe tetanus-induced (tetanic) muscle spasms can interfere with or stop your breathing. Respiratory failure is the most common cause of death. Lack of oxygen may also induce cardiac arrest and death. Pneumonia is another cause of death.
