Poor Peer Relationships
Tier 1
Teach conflict resolution skills: Teaching conflict resolution skills through role play can give the student perspective when trying to work through a conflict with a classmate.
Teach coping skills: Knowing how to calm oneself when angry is incredibly important to de-escalate conflicts when they arise.
Assign a buddy or partner: Giving the student having trouble relating a partner who is understanding and willing to connect can help the student realize that they can have a good, positive relationship with someone
Teach relationship skills: giving the students a set of norms with explanations can help the student know how to relate to others in the classroom.
Data Tracking Tool: Self-evaluated simple behavior chart. Student can analyse their behavior through a self-reflective form and share with the teacher.
Tier 2
Teach relaxation techniques: techniques to help students de-escalate conflict themselves before they can get out of control is incredibly important. This can be taught to the whole class and emphasized to the student one-on-one.
-
Daily Behavior Form: This is a student evaluation form where the student can reflect on their behavior and choices throughout the day
Data Tracking Tool: Student self-evaluation- By using this tool the student can reflect on their behavior but also feel that their perspective is heard.
Non-verbal cues and signals: sometimes all a student needs is a cue from a teacher to calm down or to refocus their attention. A tap on the shoulder or a meaningful look can work well for a student to collect themselves.
Tier 3
Check in Check Out (CICO): this is another way to keep the student accountable daily and for the student to reflect daily on their behavior.
Collaboration with child's mental health provider: knowing if there are any other issues that contribute to the student's poor peer relationships is important in seeing the bigger picture.
Counselor Referral: utilizing the counselor at school is important when the problem continues despite tier 1 and tier 2 strategies. Sometimes you need a separate pair of eyes that knows how to deal with such issues.
Continue with teaching skills and techniques to better relationships: continuing classroom and one-on-one reinforcement of conflict resolution, relationship skills, and relaxation techniques creates continuity with the student and keeps them accountable for their actions regularly.
Data Tracking Tool: School Counselor Referral Form- Sometimes you need an extra pair of eyes and some professional support. A counselor can be a great resource for providing techniques for the student to perform better in the classroom.

Case 1: Jason is always fighting with others and has a really hard time working in groups. He often gets so angry that he will react physically or say very hurtful things. When teachers attempt to mediate between Jason and others, Jason is only concerned with how he feels and is unwilling to relate or empathize with others. Other children stay away from him as a result, which makes Jason feel sad and often helpless to make things better between him and his classmates. Often, his fights at recess that go unresolved bleed into classroom time and he’s unable to focus on the lesson at a result.
