Adolescence: The Stage of Transition
What's adolescence?
It's a period of life when a child develops into an adult.
Begins around 10, 11, or 12 years old, with variations existing among cultures and
societies.
Concludes between 18-21
years of age.
The adolescents attend educational institutes, choose appropriate professions, undergo training in life skills and gradually take on adult roles.
Developmental Tasks of Adolescence
According to Robert Havighurst (1972) growth
and development occurs in six stages.
More mature relations
Using the body
effectively.
Emotional independence of parents and other adults.
Physical Characteristics Durings
Adolescence
The physical changes begin during pubescence.
Pubescence is the time that precedes puberty
Girls
Development of breasts or appearance of breast buds occurs as early as 8 years of age.
The pubic hair, the arm and leg hair usually begin to grow at 9 or 10 years
Two years after pubescence menarche that is first menstrual cycle sets in.
Boys
Growth of testicles and scrotum that begins. The penis lengthens soon after and genitals reach adult size.
Nocturnal emissions which are involuntary ejaculation of semen during sleep.
The pubic hair growth starts around the base of penis, axillary hair- the hair in the armpits, on the leg and the face emerge.
Early Maturer vs The Late Maturer
The variable rate of growth and development among sexes and also amongst the same sex adolescence can have a profound impact on the psychological development of the maturing adolescent.
