80 year old male patient with stomach cancer and malnutrition
mouth cannot receive amylase or lipase
cannot break down carbs
stomach is not getting HCL
not getting proteins
no enzymes, amino acids and neurotransmitters
pancreas don't produce pancreatic lipase
can't break down carbs, lipids and proteins
duodenum cannot absorb nutrients
liver cannot secrete bile
can't breakdown fat
effects plasma membrane, myelin and vitamins
bypass
mouth
stomach
pancreas
gallbladder
liver
duodenum
feeding tube through alimentary canal
stomach cancer
gallbladder cannot store bile
cannot digest fats
digestive tract
mouth- mechanical digestion
esophagus- prevents food from entering lower respiratory tract
stomach- produces HCL to break down food
small intestine- absorbs nutrients
large intestine- absorbs water
anus- detects renal secretions
mucosa secretes mucous
submucosa helps stomach regain "normal shape"
muscularis externa- segmentation and paralysis
serosa
accessory digestive organs
teeth
tongue
salivary glands
pancreas
liver
gallbladder
sections of stomach
fundus- stores undigested food and gases
body- breaks down food with HCL
cardiac sphincter- prevents acidic contents from moving upward
pyloric sphincter- controls flow of partially digested food
rugae- allows stomach to expand
greater/lesser omentum- fat deposition
section of small intestine
duodenum- chemical digestion
jejunum- absorbs nutrients
llium- absorbs vit. B 12
villi/microvilli - increase surface area
lacteals- absorbs fats
plicae circularis- increase surface area
sections of colon
ascending colon- carries feces
transverse colon- moves feces towards descending colon
descending colon- process waste products from the body
basic nutrients needed
protein
carbohyrdates
vitamins
fats
calcium
minerals
vitamins
water
pancreas secrete bicarbonate, trypsin, pancreatic lipase/amylase
salivary glands secrete salivary amylase/lipase
stomach secretes pepsin and HCL
liver secretes bile, gallbladder stores bile
small intestine have brush border enzymes
salivary amylase- digest starch into smaller molecules to maltose
salivary lipase- conversion of triglycerides to partial glycerides
pepsin- breaks down proteins into smaller peptides
HCL- binding of acetylcholine to G cells and starts secretion of gastrin
bile- digestions and absorption of fats
bicarbonate- neutralizing acid coming into small intestine from stomach
trypsin- breaks down proteins
pancreatic lipase- hydrolizes dietary fat molecules
pancreatic amylase- completes digestion of carbs by producing glucose
brush border enzymes- allow absorption of digested nutrients
his stomach and small intestine cannot break down foods
he will need a special liquid food mixture containing proteins, carbs, fats, vitamins and minerals though a tube into the stomach and small intestine
chemicals or enzymes are not getting added to food
salivary/pancreatic amylase
salivary/pancreatic lypase
pepsin
HCL
bicarbonate
trypsin
brush border enzymes
