Identity

-
-
-
Example: Many were forced to lose their identity and cultural ties when moving to America through Ellis Island. In fact, many had to replace their last name with another, more "American" title. Stripped of their culture and identity, this group found it hard to function in America and found solace in cultural neighborhoods that formed.
Stereotyping
a pre-judged belief that is based on real or imagined differences between groups. These
values belittle minorities and generalize those of the target group
Generalizations lead to stereotyping, and a failure to communicate will reinforce those stereotypes

Discrimination
When prejudice is translated into action. example: a person who says that all Mexicans
are lazy is guilty of prejudice, but one who refuses to hire a Mexican is guilty of discrimination
The United States had a dark period of discrimination. African Americans were restricted from entering certain buildings that were intended for "whites only". This was unfair and restricted a group from having the same privileges as others.
-
Hate/Racism
Hatred and racism are both built upon intolerance. Intolerance is built upon blaming and scapegoating. This, coupled with a lack of understanding, results in a ignorant people that will blindly hate others.
If one were to analyze the constitution's framers, they would see that even our founding fathers owned slaves and supported the oppression of black individuals. Also, organizations like the KKK have left a dark mark on history, promoting the hated of many groups.
Ignorance and
discrimination are definitely still prevalent in school. People are unaware of different cultures and racist comments tend to circulate
due to hatred.
Fear
-
Fear is used as a control method. Make people afraid of the consequences of not listening to you. This isn't just used in repressive governments, but also in America. Jails aren't made to look appealing after all.
Hitler gained supporters by scaring naysayers and using camps to suppress negative reactions
Stalin instilled fear with his brutal police force and the gulag
Antisemitism
-
Hitler established the idea of antisemitism in Germany during their Depression. The state of the country was in shambles after WWI, so he considered the Jews to be the biggest problem. This scapegoat grew in popularity and evolved into the antisemitic motives of the holocaust.
-
Obedience
-
Charles Manson's followers were under blind obedience and would support Manson no matter what. They relied on him for drugs and considered him their "salvation". They would even go to the stretch of murder for Charles.
In Jonestown, Jim Jones controlled his followers by isolating them and establishing himself as a gifted/holy figure. He told them to drink a poisoned beverage, a form of suicide that he deemed as beneficial for them. His followers (that didn't resist) were obedient and went through with his orders
