conflict in poems
-
london
suffering
In this poem it is the people that are suffering instead of soldiers or their families. this is shown by the writer picking out faces as he walks and seeing suffering in all of them. phrases like the "youthful harlots curse" show that it is the young and poor that are suffering not the rich upper class.
setting
unlike many of the other conflict poem London is not set on a battle field or involved in war in anyway. It is set on the streets of London in 1794 and shows the suffering of the people under the social class.
time period
at this time the French revolution had just happened and people were beginning to question the social ladder. all content covering the revolution was banned out of fear that the same thing would happen in England. this was when poets like William Blake started to write poems showing the suffering of the people under the upper and elite classes
remains
conflict
there is not much physical conflict in remains instead it focuses on the mental conflict and struggle the soldier has with PTSD after shooting someone. This mental suffering consists of having to re watch the moment in nightmares as well as depression and paranoia.
power
in remains the soldier has all the power. the man that he shoots is probably unarmed and running away. He is no threat and has no power over the situation. to a certain degree the soldier had no control either as he was not the only one to fire on the looter. its is implied that the other soldiers are not affected as they toss the guy in the truck with no care.
