North Carolina and Tennessee People Throughout Time
Early Histor
y
NC:
Chowanoke, Roanoke, Croatan, Machapunga, Siouans, Meherrins, and Tuscaroras Native American Tribes.
TN:
Paleo-Indians - Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian, and the Muscogee Tribes.
British Colony
NC:
Sir Walter Raleigh with the Roanoke Colony at Roanoke Island. Settlement was led by Ralph Lane. The local people were the Croatans. John White led abandoned Colonists to Roanoke Island.
TN:
Settlers from the SC Colony at Fort Loudoun. John Explorer William Gerard de Braham, led by British Captain Raymond de Mere & Paul de Mere. Overhill Cherokee Indians were spread throughout.
European Expedition
NC:
Italian explorer Giovianni de Verrazzano at Outer Banks, Spanish colonists from Hispaniola at Cape Fear, Hernado de Soto at Hickory, and Juan Pardo at Burke County with Spanish & Mississippian settlement.
TN:
Muscogee & Yuchi People settled in TN during this time. Spanish Explorers, Hermando de Sota, Tristande de Luna, & Juan Pardo entered land to find settlement for their people. The Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Cherokee Tribes were also obtained settlement here.
Statehoods
NC:
The Spanish attempted settlement, however were not successful. Settlers from Virginia situated themselves in the Albemarle region. Smallpox disease wiped out most of the Native Americans. There were about 5,000 settlers during this time that were British & African (enslaved people) in the plantations/lowland areas and Swiss & German in the New Bern/coastal areas.
TN:
Long hunters from Virginia moved west. The first Prominent European settlers emerged who were either English or Scotch-Irish. These new settlers, in addition to the Cherokee tribe, formed the Watauga Association.
Civil War
NC:
1/3 of the population included enslaved African Americans. Governed by Zebulon Baird Vance, Settlers included the East/West Farmers and the Unions/Confederates.
TN:
Governed by Isham Harris. The state was divided into East/Middle/West TN and also the Unions/Confederates.
20th Centry
NC:
Many African Americans left the state for the Midwest. The Wright Brothers had first successful air flight. Governor Charles Aycock led the education initiative and the Julius Rosenwald Fund assisted schools for African Americans in rural areas.
TN:
The Tennessee Valley Authority was established to help people during the Great Depression. The population was mixed with African Americans/Whites, men/women, and the rich/poor.

British Loyalist, Germans, Moravians, & Lutherans. Yeoman farmers, Quakers, Mennonites, and African Americans.
TN:
Renegade Cherokee and Chickamauga Tribe, British Loyalists, Dragging Canoe, and the Overmountain men.
