Mind Map Prep Meeting #9
In Chapter 8 of "Not Just a Pretty Face," by Stacy Malkan she talks about how different companies and groups are denying the fact that some chemicals in their products cause harm.
-
This is not true. Products that contain carcinogens cause cancer and they are lying if they say none of their consumers got cancer. They probably didn’t do any studies to prove there were no problems or even asked their consumers if they’re were problems.
For years tobacco companies hid the fact that smoking causes cancer and personal care products are doing the same thing Page 104
I think that this is a very good point to make. There is a real possibly that many companies are hiding the their products cause cancer and many years down the line it will be revealed that they knew they're products cause cancer.
I believe it is important for the truth about these products need to be spread more. Although there are stores around Boston with green products, I think people don't understand how dangerous the normal products they can be using to be. I think it would be important to make flyers or maybe a blog spreading awareness.
In Chapter 9 of " Not Just a Pretty Face," by Stacy Malkan, First Annual HBA Regulatory Summit happened in 2006.
From Dr. Ames: Cancer in Perspective: " 30 % smoking, 35 % of unbalanced diets, 20 % chronic infections, 20 % hormones, 2 % occupation and <1 % pollution," Page 108
Dr. Ames believes that people were getting cancer because of a poor diet and thought that it was crazy that people were worrying about pesticides.
Although many people develop cancer from these risks, I believe that it is not this cut and dry. A lot of people don't even know they have developed cancer because of the personal care products they use. There is also no way to really measure this if companies aren't transparent with what is in their products.
The CFTA decided to launch a safety initiative but it was very stressed that the program was voluntary. Page 113
This means that companies can decided if they join the movement or not. Obviously the companies that are using dangerous chemical products are not going to want to join this movement.

False information like this could be spread around Boston. One post by a famous person supporting Dr. Ames or people who don't Believe that chemicals in our personal care products could cause people to care even less about what products are being used. There needs to be more information spread about these topics.
Intelligent Nutrients All information for this brach comes from http://www.intelligentnutrients.com/ +
The products sold by Intelligent Nutrients are different from other products in that they say they are all made of plant and natural products.
One of the reasons most people don’t buy safer products like Intelligent Nutrients is because of the price. Most people do not have the money to drop $120 on a shampoo or other personal product.
This product relates back to Boston because Intelligent Nutrients is sold at Follain, Radiance Salon, Flipp Salon and Evolve Apothecary. Places like Follain give people a place to go and trust that they are going to get a green and safe product in the Boston area.
This gives the people of Boston access to safer products even if they are more expensive. We have access to clean and safe products and the option to buy them.
Another clean product that I learned about was Mother Dirt. "Mother Dirt is a mission-driven biotech startup with a personal care line that restores and preserves the good bacteria naturally found on our skin. The cornerstone of their approach is a peace-keeping bacteria, called Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB), that helps to restore balance to our skin" From http://www.motherdirt.com/rethink-clean +
The FDA does not have a definition for the word organic so companies can make it to be whatever they want organic to mean.
If I saw a product "approved" by the FDA I would not buy it. The FDA doesn't really know what they are doing and they don't recognize products that cause damage to people. They do absolutely nothing to regulate products and don't have an interest in learning how products can be dangerous.
It would be important for people in the Boston area to uderstand that the FDA doesn't do much to regulate products. Making posters and posting them around the city would bring light to the subject and people may become more educated on the FDA.
Green Chemistry
Green Chemistry is, "the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. Green chemistry applies across the life cycle of a chemical product, including its design, manufacture, use, and ultimate disposal. Green chemistry is also known as sustainable chemistry," https://www.epa.gov/greenchemistry/basics-green-chemistry +
Chemist’s in the academic, government, NGO, and business are working together to make a change in Green Chemistry by making an agenda. There agenda is to foster collaborate, inform the marketplace, track progress, the Green Chemistry Commerce Council, enhance market dynamics, and support smart policies. https://greenchemistryandcommerce.org/documents/An_Agenda_to_Mainstream_Green_Chemistry.pdf +
Chemists and many other groups are trying to make Green Chemistry a new and upcoming thing. Green Chemistry would help limit the amount of dangerous chemicals go into our products and overall make a safer product
Green Chemistry relates back to Boston because it would provide us with more information on how to make greener products. I think if there were more green products being made it would make more and more people realize that green products are a lot safer than a non green product. By getting more information on green chemistry more and more business would take interest in the Boston area.
